Le Grandi Voci Della Canzone Italiana [Import] Review

Le Grandi Voci Della Canzone ItalianaThis is a splendid collection of some of Carlo Buti's best songs. The voice is secure, accurate, but most importantly marvelous both in tone and technique. There are several other wonderful CDs of Carlo Buti favorites, and this one ranks high on the list.It is not an exaggeration to say that he never disappoints. One of Italy's finest popular tenors.Enjoy.

Onda [Enhanced, Import] Review

OndaMuch of Fiamma Fumana's music is founded upon Northern Italian traditional folk music, with many a nod to Scottish folk music as well. FF seasons these traditional sounds and themes with contemporary ideas - for example, waiting around in airports between flights, in "Check In" - and modern sounds - perhaps most notably, Medhin Paolos's electronica, which is laced throughout their albums; but also Lisa Kant's vocals, which sometimes strike a traditional, soulful stance, just as they at other times strike a modern rock pose. It is this amalgam of the traditional and the modern which is FF's defining characteristic.

Onda is a superb album. Lisa's vocals display remarkable virtuosity on each and every song. She simply has a beautiful voice, at times gentle and soothing, at other times, bursting with good-natured energy.Another distinctive feature of FF music is the often unexpected and delightful presence of Alberto Cottica's piano and acoustic guitar, which are often subtly interlaced throughout the electronica. Lady Jessica's pipes and whistles and Alberto's accordion are also defining sounds.

I mentioned before that Onda is bursting with good-natured energy. Let me add that this characteristic is indeed one of the things that makes this album so much fun: it is genuinely upbeat. While it is in many ways "modern" music, there is nothing cynical about it. On the contrary, it is a celebration of human perseverance, comradery, and talent. These latter items define FF's philosophy. If you read around on their website, it becomes very clear that these are very smart, good, and talented people who want to preserve great music, along with an emotional connection with the past, but who also want to bring these traditions forward to effect positive change in the here and now. If this all seems too heady, don't worry: this album is extraordinarily danceable and sing-along-able. Anyone with half a soul won't be able to resist smiling and tapping a toe. (Side note: For anyone who has seen FF live, their studio albums are NOT a letdown. I saw them play in Bloomington IN back in '06, and immediately purchased all their albums, and have not been disappointed by a single track. For anyone who has not seen them live, do so if you can - they're amazing.)

One more thing: If you listen to some Fiamma Fumana and like it, do an Amazon search for "Contatto." "Contatto" is Lisa Kant's remarkable solo album; but since it features her Fiamma Fumana cohorts providing instrumentation, hearing it is almost like discovering a lost FF album. See my review.

La Disparition Review

La DisparitionKeren Ann is one of those gems that are kept out of the spot light mainly because there is only a small audience for the magnificence she brings in her music. She doesn't get plastic surgery and doesnt try to fit into any type of music genre.
Her first album, 'Biographe de Luka Philipsen' was definitely a surprise hit that I stumbled upon by mistake (trying to find alternative versions of 'Aeroplane' by Red Hot Chili Peppers, I accidentally download miss Ann's version of the song). 'Biographe' contains some very good songs that fall on scales that are not repetitive in the music biz.
'La Disparition' is not as powerful nor unique as 'Biographe,' however the album continues to prolong the unique and subtle energy of the very talented Keren Ann. The beauty of Keren Ann's music falls on the simplicity of the songs... often imagined as a young girl emotionally driven and singing out of her bedroom to the world around her.
The theme from 'La Tentation' is heard again in the final song 'La Dispiration.' A very cute French song, the melody sounds like a child's song rehearsed in pre school. 'Au coin du monde' sounds like Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" on guitar. Other songs are mellow and fall in the 'Biographe' tradition.
Overall the album is good but not as good as the previous hit. Recommended songs include: 'La Disparition,' 'Aielleurs', and ' La corde et les chaussons.'

Deep River of Song: Georgia [Original recording remastered] Review

Deep River of Song: GeorgiaTo a certain extent, in terms of historical purposes, I feel that almost all the Lomax recordings are essential documents. Having said that, they all attain various degrees of musical success. What I mean is, some you'll want to hear over and over again, and others you'll feel you can do without.
This is one of my favorite discs in the Deep River Of Song Series.
I have noticed that this website doesn't bring up every disc in this series with just a "Deep River Of Song" search. In the interest of helping people find these discs here, I'll name every other disc in the series.
South Carolina
Bahamas 1935
Bahamas 1935 Volume 2
Mississippi: The Blues Lineage
Mississippi: Saints and Sinners
Black Texicans
Big Brazos
Black Appalachia
Virginia and the Piedmont
Alabama
Now, onto Georgia. First and foremost, this disc is an essential purchase for Blind Willie McTell fans. From a handful of excellent performances to some commentary and small interviews interlaced with the music, he once again displays his full wealth of musical and emotional power. Just hearing him talk about parents in the fields singing during the old days will be enough to get you all choked up.
There are also a couple good tracks of some of the music from one of the Georgia Sea Islands.
If you are wondering which few discs to pick and choose from the Deep River Of Song series, I would definitely recommend this be one of the ones you choose to buy.

Dead Man Walking [Soundtrack, Import] Review

Dead Man WalkingThis isn't exactly a review of the Dead Man Walking Soundtrack -- you can find that under one of the other listings for that CD.Rather, it's a Eddie Vedder/PJ-centric review of this particular Legacy Edition version of the CD.The Legacy Edition of the Dead Man Walking Soundtrack is a bit different in that it includes Eddie Vedder's "Dead Man," which was originally left off the original soundtrack (and the movie) because it conflicted with Bruce Springsteen's eponymous tune. Not exactly a reason to go out and buy this CD, since "Dead Man" can already be found on PJ's "Lost Dogs" album.Likewise, while the Vedder duets with undisputed master of Quawali, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, "Face of Love" and "Long Road" are pretty awesome, the complete extended versions are on the Dead Man Walking Score (not soundtrack), along with some other tunes featuring Nusrat, so you should buy that instead.

The reason to buy this Legacy Edition package is that it includes a DVD of the "Not in Our Name" charity concert denouncing capital punishment at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1998.Politics aside, the concert includes Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett (accompanied by cellist John Hagen), Ani DiFranco and then a very cool set by Eddie Vedder with Jeff Ament, John Densmore (from the Doors), David Robbins (Tim Robbins' brother, who did the movie score), along with Nusrat's nephew, Rahat Nusret Fateh Ali Khan and Dildar Hussain (on tabla).Nusrat died in early 1998, so couldn't make it here, and the acoustic mini-set by Vedder and Co. is something of a tribute concert.First, Vedder plays the Cat Stevens tune, "Trouble," a nice plaintive tune with Ed on vocals and acoustic guitar.Pretty cool. Then he does "Dead Man" with Jeff (who's on acoustic bass) -- this is such a great song and apparently one of PJ's favorites. Finally they sit down with the rest of the players for "Long Road" and "Face of Love."Everybody's pretty chill, sitting cross-legged out on a rug spread onstage, and the group tunes have great interplay between Rahat and Eddie.Eddie's even doing the Nusrat parts near the end.Of course, Rahat is no Nusrat, so it's not quite as good as the score, but it's live and pretty inspired.Parts of the mini-set used to be available on YouTube, but no more -- someone from Sony must have gotten upset -- so here's where to go for the music and the footage.

Ed clearly revered Nusrat and was influenced by his singing (e.g., "Arc" on 'Riot Act'), and it's a pity they didn't have the chance to collaborate more. But this gives you some idea of the potential, and this 30 minutes of music was well worth the (used) price I paid for the soundtrack.

Afro-American Blues and Game SongsThis is possibly the worst transfer of data into digital format that I have ever heard.I have a 30 year old copy of this album on vinyl that I carefully recorded in MP3 format. The quality of this home recording maintains the fidelity of the original recording infinitely better than this CD.I bought the CD hoping for a better digital format, not worse.I am sending back this opened and played CD to Amazon.com today.Let's see how they respond to a return that is based soley on the fact that it is an incredibly inferior product. One final note. The music of the original recording will make any effort you take to find one of the older vinyls well worth your effort.

Blue's [Import] Review

Blue's [Import]The Blue's album ment Zucchero's breakthrough in Italy and certain parts of Europe, it's a nice mixture of rock, soul and a touch of blues. The cd contains many now Zucchero-classics like the original version of Senza una Donna, Con le mani, Pippo, Hey Man and the beautiful Hai Scelto Me. If you like this album you might also want to buy the '95 Spirito DiVino album and the '01 Shake album (featuring a duet with the late John Lee Hooker)!

Metropolis [Import] Review

Metropolis [Import]How many times we italians who leave in the States are disgusted by the the stuff they sell here as "italian music"? Tired of mandolins from Neaples? Bothered by "Oh sole mio" and "Volare"? Do you want something more than the usual pummarola-music, "facciamoci quattro spaghi, sei italiano dunque mafioso, la pizza si mangia con sopra l'ananas" etc... Here you have Guccini at his best, an experienced musician, a novelist and wine drinker in the "Osterie" (bolognese pubs) all the time. Listen to "Venezia", "Bologna", "Bisanzio", "Black-out"... Juicy! Probably his best album.

La Tarantella: Antidotum Tarantulae [Import] Review

La Tarantella: Antidotum TarantulaeI heard this recording in a shop on a Friday evening a couple of years ago. I listened for a couple of minutes and I bought it then and there. This is a very unusual Early Music recording.

Instead of the usual polite and rather staid Tarantellas we often hear on recordings of Italian folk music today, this is wild and untamed music, much more suited to dancing tarantula venom out of one's system!

Christina Pluhar's L'Arpeggiata ensemble includes: three singers, 2 Baroque harps, theorbo, 4 Baroque guitars, 2 archlutes, colascione (a kind of lute), 3 "chitarra battente", psaltery, lirone, viola da gamba, cornamuse and percussion. The sounds are very rich and colourful.

The singers, Marco Beasley, Lucilla Galeazzi and Alfio Antico, sing with great verve and "naturalness" - Marco Beasley, for instance, is a tenor, but he doesn't let himself get too bogged down by his Classical technique here. This is music with a Folk origin and everyone concerned with this recording seems to have kept that in mind. The result is full of energy, colour (as I said) and rhythmical energy.

I cannot describe the music on display here, it defies description. However, take my word for it, this is a great recording and I think you will find it as fascinating as it is entertaining.

Zucchero & Co. [Box set, Import] Review

Zucchero & Co.If I were stranded on a desert island with only 10 CDs, this is definitely one of the CDs that would be with me.Zucchero may not have made it big in the States, but the list of performers who want to do duets with him of HIS music, not theirs, is so dazzling it leaves one speechless.Zucchero is a musician that other musicians listen to, and that speaks volumes.Trying to select a favorite piece on here is almost an impossibility, but I'll give it a try.Diavolo in Me with soul, R&B, and gospel godfather Solomon Burke borders is almost a religious experience. What a Wonderful World, Cosi` Celeste, Balia Morena all get under my skin and stay there.

Seeing the performances on the DVD is exhilirating as well.Again Solomon Burke just shines, even while confined tohis throne. His duet with his daughter is also charming.

If you like good music, whether or not you understand the lyrics, this collection is literally a must have.

Ironically the day after I recieved this collection, I learned from a mutual friend in Italy that I know Zucchero's current drummer. That makes listening to him even better.

Alan Lomax Collection Sampler Review

Alan Lomax Collection SamplerIf you've never heard of Alan Lomax, this CD is a great place to start, with bits and pieces of several collections of his field recordings. It touches down in Spain, Italy, the British Isles, the Carribbean, the deep South, the Appalachians, and a few other places, too. But keep in mind that it is a *sampler* album. Many of the tracks are faded out well before the end of the song in order to fit so much onto one CD. Think of it as a catalog: if you hear something you like, you figure out which of the other CDs it's from and go buy it so you can hear the rest. It's fun to listen to by itself, too.

I Successi Di Adamo, Vol. 1 [Import] Review

I Successi Di Adamo, Vol. 1 [Import]With one of the most expressive voices of our age, this extraordinary singer/songwriter has been delighting me for decades. I bought my first Adamo in 1970, because of the face on the cover. I figured anyone with so much sensitivity and beauty in his eyes had to be a great singer, and great he is.
I love this Italian language CD because of my fondness for "Non Voglio Nascondermi"...it also has translations of some of his most popular songs. The classic, "Inch Allah", "Amo" ("J'aime"), "Affida una Lacrima al Vento" ("Une Larme aux Nuages"), etc. Though born in Italy, he usually sings in French, and if you haven't heard Adamo before, I recommend getting a CD in French first, which seems to be the language he's most comfortable in, but for those of us who are die hard fans, this is the only collection that has " Non Voglio Nascondermi" in it, and that makes it a must to own !

Völker hört die Signale: Lieder der Europäischen Arbeiterbewegung Review

Völker hört die Signale: Lieder der Europäischen Arbeiterbewegung'Songs of the European Workers' Movement' is an excellent collection ofworkers' songs from European Union countries. Each song is individual, being performed by singers and musicians from its country of origin. Thestyles vary from the solo ballad of France's 'Les Temps des Cerises' to thebrass band and choir of Ireland's 'Watchword of Labour'. 'L'Internationale'features in its full French version and in German as 'Die Internationale'.The rendition of all these songs is a delightful contrast to themilitaristic 'workers' songs' characteristic of the former Soviet Bloc.

Radici [Import] Review

Radici [Import]The sick vice of Italian songwriting is pretentiousness, the hope that by merely mixing together bundles of portentous words and images you will turn out to sound like the love-child of Arthur Rimbaud and Bob Dylan. What sets Francesco Guccini quite aside is that he manages it; that this former high school teacher of Italian literature, who really does know poetry and writing, manages it with apparent effortless, writing the best lyrics I have read in any language, setting it to superb tunes, and singing it with a powerful, distinctively masculine voice. His triumph is the more remarkable in that his politics, as expressed in "La Locomotiva" here, are abominable, and his view of the world somewhat confused."La Locomotiva" is nothing less than a hymn to terrorism; but try and not get swept along by the power of the images, the pace, the passion.Even more majestic is "La canzone dei mesi", in which he gives a lyrical description of the months of the year that shows his grounding in the poetry of his ancestors. What to say?All the songs are magnificent. They survive the test of being sung as he often does - sitting on a chair with an acoustic guitar and a glass of wine, and NO BACK-UP whatever. But there is a special place in my heart for the heart-stopping tale of an old man and a child, "Il Vecchio e il Bambino", and how they communicate or fail to.One of the greatest singers in the world, at the height of his powers.

Incredibly clean sound for the 40's, all well recorded, musically superbpieces, each a perfect gem of its kind, preserving some of the oldest andbest of American music, done by some of the finest singers you've neverheard of.

Product Description:
"These songs belong to the musical tradition which Africans brought to the New World, but they are also as American as the Mississippi River. They were born out of the very rock and earth of this country, as black hands broke the soil, moved, reformed it, and rivers of stinging sweat poured upon the land under the blazing heat of Southern skies, and are mounted upon the passion that this struggle with nature brought forth. They tell us the story of the slave gang, the sharecropper system, the lawless work camp, the chain gang, the pen." --Alan LomaxThis is a reissue of Alan Lomax's legendary album Negro Prison Songs in its entirety. Around the World Review

Around the WorldIn Jose's so called "Autumn" of his carreer he has never failed to amaze me. Around The World features several different types of songs that convey Jose's fondness of the world in which we all live. This is evident in songs like "Wind Of Change" featuring a duet with Klaus Meine (from The Scorpions), "Kawa No Nagare No Yoni" from Japan, "Vurria" from Italy, & "Hine E Hine" from New Zealand. You are not going to hear Jose belt out high c's on this one. What you are going to hear is Jose sing, with his golden velvet voice, evergreens of love and passion. In my opinion Jose sounds every bit as fresh and in command with his voice as he did in the late 80's and early 90's. This is a must for all who love Jose and enjoy great singing from the soul.

1.0 [Enhanced][Import] Review

1.0 [Enhanced][Import]As worldbeat continues to spread and diversify, it's really refreshing to come across something not only new and original, but captivating as well.As far as I know, this is the first group to take traditional Italian folk songs and fuse them with dance electronics.Rather than being just another entry in the often tired worldbeat arena, this album sings, pops, bounces, and sparkles. The female vocalist, Fiamma, is excellent, and the musicians with her are equally as talented.
As is true with the most sophisticated and skilled worldbeat practitioners, the group does not limit themselves to their native melodies and instruments.Inspiration is drawn from sources as diverse as Finland and the Celtic world.Aside from programming and keyboards, instruments include accordion, tin whistle, bouzouki, and uillean pipes.
This is a top-notch release!

Aria Review

AriaAlan Sorrenti is a song writer well known for some aggressive commercial and disco hits but in his youth he was a sperimental and intellectual folk -singer.
His masterpiece Aria is inspired by Tim buckley starsailor and Peter hammill's vocal voice. The work is rather experimental and psychedelic and not easy to listen but was a best seller in 1972. His work was such rated that he was called by pink floyd for a tournee in Italy together and peter hammill decided to partecipate directly to the successive sorrenti's work (coem un vecchio incensiere).

Product Description:
The avant pop Aria is the first LP from Sorrenti. Originally released in 1972 on Harvest, the album opens with the long title track, which occupied all of Side A of the original vinyl. It's a dreamy suite that opens with acoustic guitar, ends with a remarkable violin solo from future Mahavishnu Orchestra member Jean Luc Ponty and features the incredible instrument-like voice of Sorrenti. Creating a blend of folk renderings with a melodic, avant-garde jazz backdrop, Sorrenti has rendered a vocal tapestry on par with anything Van Morrison or Tim Buckley has committed to tape.

Blue Sugar [Super Audio CD - DSD, Import] Review

Joe Cocker. So, if you love Joe Cocker's raw, gut-wrenching, spine-tingling, emotive music ... buy anything you can find by Zucchero ... you'll love the sugar-man, as I do. Songs Of Transformation [RARE] [Import] Review

Songs Of Transformation [Import]This features some of Martyn Bates best singing and was originally recorded around 1995 and was supposed to be released by Virgin Records in 1996. Due to personell change at Virgin the album was shelved until recently when MMM in Italy brought it out again in 2007. Max Eastley is better known for albums such as Buried Dreams and offers sometimes good improvisational backings to Martyn's songs here. This album is somewhere in between the Chamber Music albums, the Murder Ballads albums with Mick Harris and the 12,000 Days albums with Alan Trench (of Orchis). This album is directly available from the publisher at the regular price or from the musicians via their website eyelessingaza.com/mb.html . (Seems like distribution has not really reached Amazon ... .)

The Land Where the Blues Began [Original recording remastered] Review

The Land Where the Blues Began [Original recording remastered]The Land Where Blues Began is Alan Lomax's master ensemble of the music that shaped American music. It is the music that influenced the works of Miles Davis, Tom Waits, Ewan McColl and most recent Norah Jones. Take the tour of the Mississippi Delta of the 1930s and 1940s and listen to the story who gave birth to the Blues with such legends as Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and Fred McDowell. We need more music hunters like Lomax to record our music heritage for future generations. Lomax cross many towns and landscapes to get these first time field recordings of the now Blues greats. Lomax 'cornbread-and-poteen odyssey' across the American heartland is well documented in his candid conversations with the bluesmen and the story of how the blues became daddy of all modern-day music. It's told through those legends and through work songs, hymns, ballads, sermons, stories and smoky bars. The album captures the vivid sounds and the impossible to hold back energy and soul of the Blues fathers that changed American history.NOTE: The CD is chronicled in the book of the same name by Alan Lomax as an addition to adding to your Blues collection. The book also includes a 4 track CD sampler as well. It won the 1993 National Book Critics Award for nonfiction.

Shake [Enhanced, Import] Review

ShakeZucchero Fornaciari is a truely amazing rockstar, on this 2001 cd Zucchero teams, yet again, up with some of the biggest names in the world of rock and blues like Roy Rogers (a famous slide guitarist doing a great job on Porca L'Oca), Zachary Alford (who played drums with artists like Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie) and John Lee Hooker!
The cd starts of with Sento le Campane, together with Porca L'Oca one of the big rockers on this CD. The second track, Music in me, has a bit of a trance beat and gives Zucchero and vocalist Chance the chance to give it all they have.Porca L'Oca features Roy Rogers and reminds me of O.L.S.M.M. of the '95 Spirito DiVino album. Ali D'Oro is the beautiful duet with John Lee Hooker (recorded just weeks before his death), Ahum is a great duet with Chance that really shows how much Zucchero has been listening to Moby lately. Scintille is one of Zucchero's slower songs with both beautiful lyrics and music. The 2001 summer hit in Italy was Baila (sexy thing) a great song with catchy lyrics and music. One of the (many) highlights on this cd is Dindondio, beautiful music and Zucchero's great voice in top form. Zucchero finishes this cd of with Rossa mela della sera (great lyrics), Shake (another feel good song :-D) and Tobia (a touching ballad about Zucchero's dog... ehm....).
You should buy this cd NOW, and if you don't believe me, here's what the Billboard people said about it: "a stunning album with unfailingly excellent material"

Medieval Harp Review

Medieval HarpAfter hearing and taping a few cuts from this overlooked and little-known album about 5 years ago on NPR, I found this music to be as if someone had gone back in time to the Middle Ages and recorded it. Then recently, I found it on Amazon through sheer serendipity. I can't say that it's "authentic"sounding since no one really knows what medieval music sounded like. But, it sure sounds sweet and gentle. From courtly dances to dreamy psaltery pieces, this CD takes you all the way back to the Crusades, even.

A worthy successor to the harp/psaltery records of the late, great Elena Polonska, this is a CD no Early Music lover should be without.

So, why 4 stars? The album insert had no background info on the pieces. But, that's OK. If you're into medieval music, buy this one.

White Spirituals from the Sacred Harp Review

White Spirituals from the Sacred HarpSacred Harp music is authenicately American. The shaped notes are intended to allow individuals who do not read music to read the Sacred Harp music. It also allows the individual pitching the music to move the musicinto the range of the singers rather than using a true pitch. The melodyis in the tenor line which is sung by both genders. The music has an openharmony - altos may float above sopranos or below tenors for example.Thebeat is strictly kept and there is little variation in volume - this is notyour standard choral music.
The hymn tunes used are traditional - youwill recognize some of them. The words are traditional - heavy into theIsaac Watts and company hymns.
While I'd always recommend standing in thecenter of a singing group as an introduction to this tradition, this albumis an acceptable second choice. With any luck it will make you want tosing the music as well.

Guccini Live Collection [Import][Live] Review

Guccini Live Collection [Import][Live]This great CDof Francesco Guccini contains some of the most famous songs of this ecleptic artist, that is not only a good italian singer but also a good writer (4 works for the moment and a dialectal dictionary). A reasonto buy this CD? To try the emotions of a dream that lasts, the same in theyears, from 30 years, getting new year by year...as the good wine. Thesongs are new, the musics and the arrangements are modern, but the contentsof each song will take you in a journey through his whole musical carrer.Language: Italian

Children's Songs of the World Review

Children's Songs of the WorldI wanted a tape of songs that would help me teach a variety of foreign languages in song to my children. While this is a pleasant listening tape, it is not a tape of songs sung by native speakers; rather, it is sung by one singer who sings like an opera singer, not like a singer with whom you can sing along.I know some of these songs well, and the words are not sung clearly enough by the singer that I could make out the words I did know.
If you want to become familiar with the melodies of some foreign songs, this is a nice tape, but you won't learn much from it otherwise.I gave it three stars.

1.0 [Enhanced] Review

1.0As worldbeat continues to spread and diversify, it's really refreshing to come across something not only new and original, but captivating as well.As far as I know, this is the first group to take traditional Italian folk songs and fuse them with dance electronics.Rather than being just another entry in the often tired worldbeat arena, this album sings, pops, bounces, and sparkles.
