Aria [Import] Review

Alan Sorrenti is a song writer well known for some aggressive commercial and disco hits but in his youth he was a sperimental and intellectual folk -singer.
His masterpiece Aria is inspired by Tim buckley starsailor and Peter hammill's vocal voice. The work is rather experimental and psychedelic and not easy to listen but was a best seller in 1972. His work was such rated that he was called by pink floyd for a tournee in Italy together and peter hammill decided to partecipate directly to the successive sorrenti's work (coem un vecchio incensiere).

I was strolling on the Champs Elysee in Paris a few years back, wandered into the big Tower Record store and "found" this amazing album being played at many of their headphone "listening" stations.It was a must buy, must have, must play repeatedly album.There is not a bad song on the album.Zucchero's voice has always reminded me of another of my favorite singers ... Joe Cocker.So, if you love Joe Cocker's raw, gut-wrenching, spine-tingling, emotive music ... buy anything you can find by Zucchero ... you'll love the sugar-man, as I do. This is definately a DID (desert island disc) ... the one you'd most want to have with you to survive SURVIVOR!

The Best of Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari's Greatest Hits [Extra tracks][Import] Review

It is a real shame that this album only has one review, so I thought I would correct that.
As a Steve Vai, Steve Morse ( anything guitar instrumental actually ) you can tell this is not my usual listening "fodder", but you need some light and dark in any collection, and this is a fantastic collection of songs which I put on if I am in company.
There is not a single song that you will fail to either sing along to, or be moved by. I am not a great one for listing each track and saying this is very mellow, this has a great guitar solo etc, but in this album you have it all.
I should say that Zucchero has one GREAT voice.
Out of the three hundred or so albums I have, this could well be the one album I would take with me if I was limited to just one ... that is a huge compliment to its variety and yes, I agree with the previous reviewer ...GREAT FUN

Probably one of the best album's I've bought yet. I have never heard a multi artist album collection of this caliber from start to end. (Hey Man / B.B. King / zucchero) how long I have been waiting to get this on CD. I first heard it sometime back on a Pavarotti DVD.Very surprised to hear Marcy Grey bring on with the big name's good on her. Every song on this album goes deep and finds the roots of life. You want to cut yourself away from the rest of the world then listen to this on surround sound and be at piece with your self. To end off, if you ever want to make a unforgettable impression on your partnerhave a candle light dinner and whip this CD on. Say no more.

Uykkepo Live at the Kremlin [Import][Live] Review

If you notice that a lot of Zucchero's best known numbers are missing on the track list, there's a good reason why: they hadn't been written/recorded yet!This is a 1990 recording of Zucchero, backed by a killer band, in the heart of Moscow for a concert.As the liner notes go to great pains to point out, this is not one of those live recordings that's been "sweetened" in the recording studio after the fact; there is no overdubbing, so you're hearing what was heard 18 years ago.

And what do you hear?You hear a fabulous show.The performances are excellent, and the recording quality is far better than you'd expect (an analog recording on DAT tape, according to the notes).The first three numbers are worth the price of the package by themselves, and by the time you hit "Diamante" (track 5 on the first disk), you'll know that you've made a great purchase.Zucchero is at his best here, and guest stars like Toni Childs and Randy Crawford are icing on the cake.

My only complaint (and the reason for the missing fifth star in the rating) is on disk 2.The first three tracks on the side represent the end of the show (closer "Solo..." is another of those worth-the-price-by-itself tracks), and then the whole show slows w-a-y down.Several of the six (count'em - SIX) encores aren't nearly as good as the show they follow.The album picks up again and ends strong, but you can definitely ho-hum your way through two or three tracks.I guess nobody's perfect.

On the whole, though, this is an incredibly good package.And at the prices quoted here, it's well worth the money.

Shake [Limited Edition] Review

This album, despite the title, is more contemplative and melancholy than its optimistic title might suggest. certainly "Baila" and "Shake" are true to the title, but its real strength lies precisely in the slower songs I believe. Some of my favorites in this respect are "'Rossa Mela della Sera"' and "Dindondio", perhaps the fines track on the album. Zucchero once agin confirms his artistic autonomyand has been able to create an album with music that is surely to be popular, but without compromising its style to commercial considerations. He is perhaps best comapred to Joe Cocker in the English singing world both in style and voice. For those of you that might be concerend about songs in a language other than english, Zucchero often mixes Italian and English and regulalry features blues and gospel type choires in the background in a very effective and original way.

Traversata: Italian Music in America [Live][Original recording remastered] Review

While I can't claim to be any sort of an expert on Italian music, I must say that this is a fantastic cd. Being a fan of old movies, there are quite a few times while listening to this cd that all I can picture in my head is Sophia Loren circa 1958 strolling along a beach. Yeah it's THAT good.

Aside from Puccini, Cipolla, Eddie Lang, and the Godfather music, I wasn't really familiar with any of this music or its composers but now I wonder why this music has seemingly been forgotten. It's really gorgeous music and I am extremely grateful to David Grisman for "introducing" me not only to these Italian styles, but also to the two specific Italian musicians on this cd, Carlo Aonzo (mandolin) and Beppe Gambetta (14-string harp-guitar). The harp-guitar is usually in a supporting role here so it's never the lead instrument but it has wondeful, rich tone. I was suprised at times that it is a wooden guitar because it has a low-end more reminiscent of a National.

Carlo is the leader here, from playing to arranging. He is "the mandolin find" of the year for me this year, a truly great player. I initially had my doubts as to whether these guys would sound good next to Grisman but it turns out that they steal the show. Carlo also plays one of the single best moments of the cd when he takes a turn on mandocello for track #4 (Manzanillo).

Acoustic Disc has released many great cd's over the last decade and this is one of the best. The only other "ethnic" cd Grisman has released that can compare to this one is the masterpiece, Songs Of Our Fathers, but this one has better, richer sound than does that one.

The Best of Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari's Greatest Hits Review

This particular "Greatest Hits" has mostly English lyrics, and a different song selection from the Polydor Italian version. I have both versions.This one is a lovely compilation of some of his best songs sung in English.I have been listening to Zucchero for a couple of years now and still have not tired of his sound.If you have never heard him, this is a perfect CD to start out with, since it showcases his songs being sung in English and therefore does not put a language barrier (in my case) between the music and the words. But, I also love all of his Italian versions and buy both when ever available. As a 'starter' CD this one is perfect.
