Blue Sugar [Import] Review

Blue SugarI was strolling on the Champs Elysee in Paris a few years back, wandered into the big Tower Record store and "found" this amazing album being played at many of their headphone "listening" stations. It was a must buy, must have, must play repeatedly album. There is not a bad song on the album.Zucchero's voice has always reminded me of another of my favorite singers ... Joe Cocker. So, if you love Joe Cocker's raw, gut-wrenching, spine-tingling, emotive music ... buy anything you can find by Zucchero ... you'll love the sugar-man, as I do. This is definately a DID (desert island disc) ... the one you'd most want to have with you to survive SURVIVOR!

With Joyful Voice: Christmas Music of Eight Centuries [Box set]These three excellently produced CDs evoke medieval manor houses, renaissance courts, and baroque choir boys as we hear Christmas music, fresh to our ears from another time and place. We hear familiar Christmas carols as well, but in their original setting.A mood of quiet joy pervades the presentation.

Miserere [Import] Review

Miserere [Import]I buy and sell used CDs on Amazon, and this "hobby" affords me to get to try out and keep some great music for myself.Zucchero's Misere is one of these keepers. I ususally know within a few notes if I want to burn a copy for myself, and with this guy, I knew it FAST...after the first few operatic notes, it starts DRIVING with a rhythm I KNEW i had heard before...the second song sounds like PRIME day ( late 60s) Joe Cocker with Santana's drummer...thats because it IS Santana's drummer, the FANTASTIC Michael Shrieve, from the Woodstock-era Santana....what a combination !!! and what a GREAT ROCK ALBUM....sounds like the BEST of the 60s and 70s come BACK TO LIFE....I'll be buying more of the sugarman....marty smith

The Classic Ocarina Review

The Classic OcarinaThe Chuckerbutty Ocarina Quartet proves here that good musicianship and lots of fun can co-exist sensationally. For an ear sated with the standards this CD will jog you out of the rut while it shows what can be done with an unconventional instrument. The Carnival of Venice variations is an awesome display of virtuosity, and very enjoyable as light music (between variations don't be surprised to hear a quote from some familiar classic). The Beethoven 5th will not go down as an historic interpretation, but it's fun! Overall the disk has variety, humor, and fine playing, and it's a great conversation piece. I recommend it with pleasure.

Spirito DiVino [Extra tracks, Import] Review

Spirito DiVinoAlthough this is not the latest album from his large collection it's the most memorable. If you're not familiar with Zucchero's work, you'll be pleasantly surprised by his blues/funk/rock style. Listen to sound samplesat Zucchero's Official Website, if they don't have them listed here. Ifyou're just starting your Zucchero collection, stray away from the abumswith songs that he's either translated or sung originally in English. Forsome reason, his raspy style of belting out tunes works best in Italian.

Zu & Co (Italian Version) [Import] Review

Zu & CoProbably one of the best album's I've bought yet. I have never heard a multi artist album collection of this caliber from start to end. (Hey Man / B.B. King / zucchero) how long I have been waiting to get this on CD. I first heard it sometime back on a Pavarotti DVD.Very surprised to hear Marcy Grey bring on with the big name's good on her. Every song on this album goes deep and finds the roots of life. You want to cut yourself away from the rest of the world then listen to this on surround sound and be at piece with your self. To end off, if you ever want to make a unforgettable impression on your partnerhave a candle light dinner and whip this CD on. Say no more.

Shake [Import] Review

Shake [Import]This is a interesting album, ranging from a contemplative, to a moodier song with John Lee Hooker, to rock, to his characteristic version of Italian pop. There are some excellent vocals, nice instrumental effects and some notable guitar and piano.

This version of the release has more of the songs sung in English (some of the other editions have some of these songs in Italian or Spanish). This edition also has several inserts in the set of booklets/artwork that come with it (that may or may not be part of other versions). Lyrics included match the vocals/language of each song.

Smarnamisa! Resia Valley Music [Import] Review

Smarnamisa Resia Valley Music [Import]I was looking for several years to get in touch with Resian music. It was almost impossible the last know LP record was published in 1973. Resia is a small walley in Italy. It has only few residents - less than 100 who are speaking an old version of slavic language. They have also their own culture and music cult. They play strings - violinas on a different way. They suport violinas with their bellies and not with neck. When they are playing violinas, they are using a foot to produce rythem. The sound of their music is powerful and optimistic. Their string music is similar to music from Bretagne or Ireland.
This CD represent a complet overview of Resian musical heretagie. The opening songs brings in a close touch with virgin Resian country side. Through the CD you are going to explore the beauty of nature and people habbits. Song Bant's music represents the highest peak of CD.
You are going to see how isolation in narrow alpine walley makes poeple to choose a different way of development of language and culture.
If you are looking for authentic folks music, this is a right decision for you.

Uykkepo Live at the Kremlin [Import][Live] Review

Uykkepo Live at the Kremlin [Import][Live]If you notice that a lot of Zucchero's best known numbers are missing on the track list, there's a good reason why: they hadn't been written/recorded yet! This is a 1990 recording of Zucchero, backed by a killer band, in the heart of Moscow for a concert. As the liner notes go to great pains to point out, this is not one of those live recordings that's been "sweetened" in the recording studio after the fact; there is no overdubbing, so you're hearing what was heard 18 years ago.

And what do you hear? You hear a fabulous show. The performances are excellent, and the recording quality is far better than you'd expect (an analog recording on DAT tape, according to the notes). The first three numbers are worth the price of the package by themselves, and by the time you hit "Diamante" (track 5 on the first disk), you'll know that you've made a great purchase.Zucchero is at his best here, and guest stars like Toni Childs and Randy Crawford are icing on the cake.

My only complaint (and the reason for the missing fifth star in the rating) is on disk 2.The first three tracks on the side represent the end of the show (closer "Solo..." is another of those worth-the-price-by-itself tracks), and then the whole show slows w-a-y down.Several of the six (count'em - SIX) encores aren't nearly as good as the show they follow. The album picks up again and ends strong, but you can definitely ho-hum your way through two or three tracks.I guess nobody's perfect.

On the whole, though, this is an incredibly good package. And at the prices quoted here, it's well worth the money.

Italian Treasury: The Trallaleri of Genoa Review

Italian Treasury: The Trallaleri of GenoaAlan Lomax Collection released by Rounder Records is a fantastic exploration of world and folk music based on the mid-20th-century recordings made by brilliant ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax. The collection includes music from around the world, including US, Caribbean, Spain, and Italy. The authenticity and beauty of these recordings is stunning, sound quality is excellent, and notes that accompany each CD (based on original notes by Alan Lomax) are extremely comprehensive and are exceptionally well researched.

The Trallaleri of Genoa is one of the jewels of the Italian Treasury series. This recording explores the improvised five-voiced male polyphony that originated in the Italian region of Liguria (Genoa is the largest city of the region.) The five voices that define Trallalero are falsetto, tenor, chitarra (guitar), baritone, and bass. The history Trallalero goes back for many centuries, as Alan Lomax points out when he notes that "this Ligurian style is probably one phase of music that is literally as old as human time," however we can only speculate about the origins of this style of singing. I don't want to bore you with the theory of Trallalero, however keep in mind that the notes that accompany this recording discuss the history and theory of Trallalero in great detail.

This CD is one of those recordings that blew me away as soon as I heard the very first five seconds of the very first song, and a strong desire (but lack of ability) to join in the chorus didn't leave me until the music stopped. The level of understanding and agreement these rustic men achieve in order to create these perfectly improvised melodies of rare beauty and complexity should be an object of endless envy for the solitary and self-sufficient urban dwellers we have become. The deep soulfulness of these songs is rooted in the earth itself, the melodies are intricate yet very straightforward, and cheap Italian wine is soaking through every note...
Trallaleri is the music that makes me want to quit the half-hearted complexities of the civilization and embrace the hearty simplicity of the country. Trallalero is best enjoyed with a group of friends, a jug of wine, a chunk of fresh Mozzarella, and a loaf of fresh Italian bread...

Rita Streich: Folksongs & Lullabies Review

Rita Streich: Folksongs & LullabiesWhat a blessing it is that technology can preserve voices like this, sounding their best! This disc, like Lucia Popp's 'Children's Songs and Lullabies', shows the diva, Rita Streich, turning to the demands and restraints of the lied, her lovely coloratura voice now gay, now poignant, in all its clear purity. The spirit of different folksongs (including German, Swiss, French, Italian, English, Russian, Japanese ..) is captured beautifully by Streich, sometimes supported, admirably, by the Singgemeinschaft Rudolf Lamy and especially the Regensburger Domspatzen, notably in 'Der Burgermeister von Wesel' and 'Der Kuckuck'.Her very soft, very high notes, held or tossed off, are thrilling throughout but especially in the Mozart canon 'Ave Maria'.While the personality of the performer is not as striking as Popp's on her disc, Streich's simple rendition of a generous 32 songs gives the listener 79 minutes of magic.

Music for Harp [Box set] Review

Music for Harp [Box set]In spite of the fact the harp is possibly the oldest musical instrument, its sonorities are unlimited. In the XIX Century, the French and Russian composers took into account it. Curiously, Carl Reineceke showed an unusual interest by it; this historical transition toward the raising Century, where Joaquin Rodrigo a renowned pupil of Paul Dukas, nourished his muse in Los Sones della Giralda.

But to be honest there has always been a visible contempt about it, and has been relegated as a curtain instrument to remark certain anima states. With the Musical Impressionism many composers seemed to understand the multiple expressive possibilities of the harp, but the effervescence would not last so long.

This is a very selected set that includes some one the most traditional Opus of the harp. Since the lyric and naive Francois Adrian Boldieau ` s concert to the hyper romantic Gliere `s Concerto.

Absolutely recommended for all those who love this instrument. You will additionally find out a very high performance level, along both CD' s.

And considering this bargain price, the temptation is enormous, don' t you?

FARAUALLA Review

FARAUALLAThis cd is nearly indescribable.Faraualla are a group of women from Southern Italy who perform chants and vocal harmonies, with some minimal percussion. The style of the music is one-of-a-kind, but to my ears sounds strangely much more African than Italian. There is a similar style of singing (of much lower quality) on some of Alan Lomax's Italian Treasury cds, which captures the same vaguely African (or at least very non-Western) sound. The songs often include one vocal part which is a stacatto grunt or fast breathing or other odd nontraditional sound. Not all the songs were to my liking on first listen, but all of them have grown on me.
Vrliko Kolo is a beautiful haunting dirge-like melody, with a steady low drumbeat throughout.Elleipseis sounds to me like fifties doo wap, but with melodies ten times more complex. Spondo and Questa Fanciull' Amor sound like Western choral pieces, and are beautifully performed.Fescennehas a strange, truly indescribable, half-spoken beginning, then breaks into delightful harmonies.Almost none of the songs are easily catogorized.
This is beautiful, beguiling, challenging, moving, and entertaining music truly off the beaten path.A treasure.

The Moon of Wintertime Review

The Moon of WintertimeA lovely collection of traditional carols and dances from Western Europe--some haunting, some jaunty, and all richly orchestrated for voice, keyboard, dulcimer, viola, recorder, guitar, mandolin, double bass and world percussion. This album has the same depth, quality and wholesome honesty of McCauley's other work, and while it starts off on the gentle side, it picks up in intensity as it goes along.Although all the tracks are great, my favorites are towards the end, including the rowdy "Bring Us In Good Ale," the inventive, Mid-East-tinged "Star of the East," and Frank Jackson's folksy arrangement of the 14th century Italian dance "Trotto," which is full of fiery fiddle, thrumming guitar and hints of progressive folk.Throughout their recording career, McCauley and husband/co-producer Kurt Scherer have maintained a core group of truly talented musicians, whose camaraderie and sensitivity to each other's improvisations continues to shine through in each new endeavor.Phil Heaven (bowed strings) and Frank Jackson (recorders and whistles) have been with them since their 1998 debut album, "Sabbath Day's Journey," while guitarist Brian Cunningham and percussionist Jason Darling have been around for at least the past one or two.Joining the team on this album is Lynne Givler on double bass, adding a nice depth and grounding to the sound.Everybody seems to have a Christmas album these days, and "The Moon of Wintertime" is a great one, with a distinctive mood and flavor all it's own.Compare and contrast it with some other stylish favorites of mine, also highly recommended: "A Winter Garden" and "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" by Loreena McKennitt, "Celtic Christmas I & II" and "Joy! Joy! Joy!" by Kim Robertson, "Celtic Christmas III: A Windham Hill Sampler," One Wintry Night" by Jerry Read Smith and Lisa Maria Smith, "Sanctus" by the Angels of Venice, "Christmas" by Tino Izzo, "Poets and Angels" by Ottmar Liebert, "Wolcum Yule" by Anonymous 4, "An Angel's Noel" by the Ware-Patterson Duo, and "Christmas Morning" and "Silent Night" by Lisa Lynne.

The World's Greatest Tenors [Box set] Review

The World's Greatest Tenors [Box set]I was very pleased to purchase this set on ebay for less than $20.00.
Recognize, first, that many of these are vintage recordings, with vintage sound. And, tenor fanatics will always question who are considered the world's greatest tenors.
This is a seven-disc set.One disc each is given to Caruso, Gigli, Richard Tauber, and Joseph Schmidt.John MacCormack and Richard Crooks share one disc.Another is the Carreras-Domingo-Pavarotti triumvirate. However, the Carreras portion, which comprises almost half of the disc, is entirely scenes from live performances, not tenor arias. The seventh (actually numbered Disc 6) is called simply "Great Tenors" and provides some additional Crooks, Tauber, and Gigli, plus Bjoerling, Di Stefano, Peerce, Schipa, and ... Luigi Infantino, Derek Oldham, and Heddle Nash?No sign of Gedda, Kraus, Tucker, Bergonzi, del Monaco, or Corelli.
Basically, the problem for me is that most of what is included here is duplication of what was already in my collection.Every tenor on these recordings is represented more completely in other recordings--even Infantino and Oldham, although these two more sparsely than the others.
Would I purchase it again? For $95.00--definitely not.For $20.00--perhaps, if what I wanted was a sampling of great tenor singing, without investing in a larger collection.

Alma Gluck Review

Alma GluckAlma Gluck sold millions of records for Victor back when Caruso was King. Not a monster operatic voice, she instead was perfectly suited to the early acoustic recording process, and turned out a wealth of pot-boiler tunes. Along with these she also recorded a considerable number of art songs and some operatic pieces. A fine linguist, Gluck was pretty much the perfect lyric soprano, merging a beauty of a voice with marvelous technical skills. Her popularity should never disquise the quality of her artistry.
Gluck and Caruso recorded one selection together, a fine record, but it is to her solo selections you should hear for the true range and measure of this endearing singer. If you care for singing, and are not averse to the older style prevalent at the turn of the 20th century, you should give this CD a long careful look. There are two Cds and a wealth of selections to sample. They should give you a very clear idea if Gluck is for you.
Marston did a fine job on the transfers; aided in part by the luxury of Gluck's great popularity most of her records can be found in superb condition. I believe many of the records came courtesy Lawrence Holdridge, the premier auctioneer in America of older opera records. Lucky us!
The enclosed booklet does a fine job discussing Gluck's career and life. She was married to the outstanding violinist Efrem Zimbalist, and they made several recordings matching his beautiful playing to her fabulous singing. Her singing of the famous aria "Depuis le jour" from Louise is enchantment itself.
For Remington Steele fans, Stephanie is Gluck's granddaughter.

Chris Norman: Portraits Review

Chris Norman: PortraitsThis CD really can't be seen as a "best of" album, because I think Norman has too many great pieces to fit on one CD, but what it can be seen as is an incredible collaboration of his many years of hard work. This CD consists of selections from his various CDs with groups/ individuals like Helicon (a Baltimore based trio), The Baltimore Consort, Alasdair Fraser, Camerata Bariloche, Pete Sutherland, Custer LaRue, and the list goes on. If these names don't mean anything to you, just trust me that they are all magnificent musicians who are well known on the international circuit. Although I own the CDs that more than 60% of these songs came from, there are a collection of previously unreleased tracks on this album that keep me coming back for more. My favorite tracks are 5-8, 11-14, and 15. Track 5 stands alone as what I consider the greatest waltz I've ever heard. Billy Comiskey is incredible on the accordian, and the Quebecois blend is something so amazing that it cannot be described in words. Tracks 6-8 are a series of reels from Norman's "The Beauty of the North" CD, and they simply make you feel good all over. Tracks 11-14 are a series of American tunes from Norman's "The Man With the Wooden Flute" album, and are a wonderful blend of upbeat little tunes. Track 15 is the first song of Norman's that I can specifically remember falling in love with. Again, I can't really describe why it's so incredible, but take my word for it, and buy this album, not just for the specific tracks that I mentioned, but for the entire experience that Norman creates. It's truly magnificent!

Pure Classical Gold Review

Pure Classical GoldI bought this CD hoping to have a large variety of Classical music at my fingertips for easy listening. In a sense, that's what I got.

Unfortunately, this large quantity of music was at a very, very low quality.Whether the trouble was in the Orchestrae themselves, the recording process, or the post-processing, this music is usually recognizable, but not at the quality one might want to listen to.Some of the tracks were better than others, but at their worst, I suspected that several of the tracks were low-budget MIDI sequences, rather than actually being performed by live people.

So, yes, this is a great price for lots of music. However, you get what you pay for, and over 3 discs, your money gets spread awfully thin.

Italian Treasury: Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta Review

Italian Treasury: Piemonte and Valle d'AostaI'm don't think I'm a sopisticated reviewer of music, and I do not have Italian heritage; I simply liked this CD, and generally like unpolished regional music. If you want something slick, this probably isn't for you. The voices are not trained, and sometimes the singing is off-key; some of the music is peppy but much of it is lilting, soothing, and fairly melodic.

PatchworkThe liner notes on this CD state that Hesperus chose to mix the styles of early and traditional music "for no good reason at all."The result is a mix of medieval-Renaissance music with traditional American music that is truly delightful. The three members of Hesperus play a diverse group of traditional and modern instruments and their choice of instruments on particular songs is as interesting as the choice of the songs that they blended together. The music is crisp and clear showing that the members know their music and their instruments.Dr. Tina Chancey is an expert on early music, while Scott Reiss is a graduate student studying ethnomusicology. All three members are experienced recording artists. The only (minor) drawback to this album is that Bruce Hutton, the solo vocalist, is excellent on some music, but seems a little bland on the blues tunes.Unlike more "authentic" recordings of traditional/historical music, this CD provides insight into the evolution of music and into (perhaps) into the shared motivation of musicians through time.In any case, the sheer joy contained in the music makes this CD a lot of fun!!
